Contest will be published via EU Info Centre’s social networks’ accounts and will be open from 5 August- 5 September 2014. drawings should be submitted no later than 5 September 2014 at 17:00 via whereas the message should be titled: alternative mobility – “Green Ideas for Our City”.

The first three prizes are a bicycle, inline skates, and a scooter, whereas 20 of the best works will be displayed in EU Info Centre in September within the marking of European Mobility Week. Being main sponsors of the action, City of Belgrade and Urban Public Transport Enterprise “Beograd” will promote the winning drawings on two of their public transportation vehicles.

All of the submitted works will be published on EU Info Centre’s Facebook page from 6-11 September. By liking, citizens will be enabled to vote for the best 20 works due to be exhibited in Dom omladine in Belgrade, whereas the Jury will decide the winners of the first three prizes.

European Mobility Week (ENM) is an annual campaign on sustainable urban mobility, which runs from 16-22 September every year. With a series of events across Europe, under the motto “Our Streets, Our Choice”, the focus of the campaign is on the growing need of adjusting the streets and cities to citizens, and not to cars.

The Message of the EnE13/ Conference: profession, education and partnership should be the basis of environmental protection activities

More than 120 participants at the Conference “Environment to Europe”, which was held on 10th June 2013 in Belgrade, are committed to the idea that the environment sector and activities of environment involvement into other sectoral policies should be based on knowledge and professionalism. The importance of education in the environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as the need of funds allocation to this sector and continuity in this, were specifically emphasized. Various important topics in environmental sector were presented and discussed at the conference. The conference was registered by IUNEP, as an event celebrating the World Environment Day.
The Minister of Energy, Development and Environmental protection Professor Zorana Mihajlovic, in her speech, emphasized commitment to strengthen the environmental sector. Most attention was paid to her statement that a budgetary fund for environment would soon be established. The Minister recalled that in the environmental protection of Serbia there were three priorities – the question of waste management policy, promotion of recycling industry and resolution of serious pollution problems present in our country for decades. She finally said that the main task of the ministry, as well as the Serbian government, was to work together in order to raise the “environmental” awareness and “environmental” security.
Head of the Economic Cooperation Department of German Embassy in Serbia Mr. Christoph Eichen particularly stressed that protection of the environment was one of the most challenging chapters in the accession to the European Union and the local authorities had a key role in the implementation of regulations and standards in this area. A representative of the EU Delegation in Belgrade, the Advisor to the Minister Mr. Andrew Headey, commented on the importance of the capacity for the implementation of regulations pertaining to the environment, pointing out very important roles of local governments, businesses and public administration at all levels. Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Serbia Mr. Jürg Staudenmann, referred to the examples of good practice and possible solutions offered in the study of the green economy, which was the basis of a platform for the participation of the Serbian delegation in the World Conference on Sustainable Development Rio +20
In the introduction, the participants were welcomed by Mr. Ivica Radovic, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, Mr. Zoran Sretic, a representative of the Office for European Integration of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Klaus Schmidt – Head of IMPACT Project of the German Organisation for International Cooperation, Mr. Milan Hadzic representative of the sector of environmental protection, energy and health, EPTISA – Regional Office for South-East Europe and MISP project and Mr. Dusan Stokic, secretary of the Board of Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development CCIS.
MISP Programme of the European Union and activities on large infrastructure projects in the field of environmental protection were presented by the Deputy Team Leader Ms. Dragana Vasic.
The Conference was supported by: EPTISA, Hemofarm Fund and Coca Cola Hellenic, with institutional support of the Ministry of Energy, Development and Environmental Protection, Ministry of Natural Resources, Mining and Spatial Planning and National Committee for Cooperation with UNESCO. EU Green week

Site visit and announcement of opening of the Regional Landfill Srem-Mačva

EU Green Week – 25 million euro investment for environmental protection

Šabac, 5 June 2013 – HE Vincent Deger, Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Dusan Mrakić, State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Development and Environment, Mr. Milos Milosevic, Mayor of Sabac and Mr. Branislav Nedimović, Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica have visited today the new Sabac transfer station, as well as the Srem – Mačva regional landfill and officially announced the launch of both units.

The total value of the regional sanitary landfill is €6.32 million. It is funded by €5.02 million from the EU, the cities invested €1 million, whereas €3 million was provided by the former Environmental Protection Fund. The newly established regional company “Regional Landfill Srem-Mačva” will become operational in the next few months. The existing dumps sites in the territory of Sremska Mitrovica and Sabac failed to provide sanitary measures. This project has enabled the construction of one of the largest regional landfills in Vojvodina and Macva District that will provide environmental disposal of waste for over 209.000 citizens. In addition, the solid waste management plan will have long lasting positive effects on biodiversity of the Sava River basin.

The wastewater treatment plant is currently under construction in Sabac. The construction site is located near Sabac transfer station, and the total value of the project amounts to €18.562 million, of which the nearly €10 million was provide through the EU IPA funds.

The cities of Sremska Mitrovica and Sabac, through the EU-funded MISP programme, were awarded grants for the construction of two major municipal infrastructure projects in the field of environmental protection, in the total amount of more than €25 million: construction of the regional landfill Srem Mačva and construction of the wastewater treatment plant in Sabac. Furthermore, in cooperation with the EU MISP program two documents were developed: communication plans for Sremska Mitrovica – Sabac Solid Waste Management Scheme and Sabac Wastewater Treatment project. The communication strategy development was funded through EU technical assistance to the construction projects of the regional landfill and the wastewater treatment plant. The communication plans are aimed at educating local population on environmental issues, emphasizing the importance of recycling, primary waste selection, the importance of connecting to the sewer network, and the environmental protection of the Sava River basin. Within the “Don’t get Serbia dirty” campaign MISP has prepared an educational film on environmental protection, TV commercials, radio commercials and graphic design for billboards and posters.

The “EU Green Day” which was held in Sabac is an outdoor event during which the citizens were presented with publications on environmental protection at the the stalls of the EU Information Centre and the EU Delegation. There was also a „Openly on Europe“ video booth where people were able to say what they would like to see improved in their environment and send a message to the EU. The youngest visitors were drawing “My green planet,” took part in the EU Ground that represents a kind of European games with no borders and verified their knowledge of environment protection in an interactive quiz. This action also represents the start of the environmental protection promotion which will last until the end of June, and will be marked in a series of events by the EUD and Euinfo Center.
